U2 Frontman Bono Gives Update On His Injury: ‘It Is Not Clear That I Will Ever Play Guitar Again’

It's been a rough couple of months for U2 frontman Bono. The musician has been struggling to recover after getting into a very bad bike accident in November. On New Year's Day, Bono, who has not been able to perform since his accident, posted what he called a “very personal” letter to his fans on U2's official website, explaining how he is recovering and what the future may—or may not—hold for him.

“For the last few weeks I haven't been able to move around physically so I have more than made up for it by leaving my mind to wanderlust, untethered except electronically,” Bono began the letter, which described his year from ‘;A to Z.' “I broke my hand, my shoulder, my elbow and my face but the real injury this year was to my Irish pride.”

Bono's list of injuries included a fracture of the orbit of his eye and three fractures in his left shoulder blade. Bono's most serious injury was a fracture of his left humerus bone. The bone, which is located in the upper arm, reportedly shattered in six different places.

In his letter, Bono also opened up about his prognosis for recovering from his massive injuries.

“Recovery has been more difficult than I thought... As I write this, it is not clear that I will ever play guitar again,” Bono wrote. “The band have reminded me that neither they nor Western civilization are depending on this… I personally would very much miss fingering the frets of my green Irish falcon or my (RED) Gretsch. Just for the pleasure, aside from writing tunes.”

In November, orthopedic trauma surgeon Dean Lorich, MD told Rolling Stone that Bono's injuries were extensive and that the singer would “require intensive and progressive therapy” in order to make a full recovery from his injuries.

Bono's long letter wasn't just about himself, however. The singer also discussed everything from Kanye West to malaria. His band, U2, was also a topic. While Bono said that he had to cancel all of his scheduled appearances for the first half of 2015, due to his injuries, he hopes to be back out on stage with U2 by this spring, when the band's live tour is scheduled to begin in British Columbia, Canada.

“U2 is a live band,” Bono wrote. “Live is where we live or die. The songs continue to grow night after night. We have some extraordinary ideas up our sleeve for this tour I've just got to be rebuilt by 14th May.”
