Ed Sheeran Picks Up British Artist Of The Year Award At BBC Music Awards

As if 2014 hadn't shown Ed Sheeran enough love already, the songwriter has ended the year being credited as the BBC Music Awards' British Artist of the Year. The night also proved to be a success for Marilyn Monroe hitmaker Pharrell Williams who dominated the even with two wins.

After accepting his award, Ed, 23, went on to speak to the evening's hosts, Fearne Cotton and Chris Evans, about his career highlights so far, but in true Sheeran style remained completely modest. "I always thought my career would stop at one album. So knowing that my career will be longer than one album is probably the highlight for me." The hosts then asked the singer what his next move was. "I think for me, I really love my job. I don't want it to end so even if people stop listening to the music I'm still gonna make it!" So you should, Ed!

The Thinking Out Loud hitmaker wasn't the only talented star to win one of the evening's four awards. Pharrell pulled in an impressive two wins, winning the prize for both Song of The Year with 'Happy', the only category that was voted for by the public, and International Artist of the Year. The music producer was unable to attend the event, but accepted his wins via satellite. The American star described Happy's global success as "weird" and "not something I can determine". Paying tribute to the people who watched, streamed or downloaded the song, he said: "Songwriters are beholden to what the audience thinks. When you say 'song of the year' it's not really my award, it's your award."

Upcoming band Catfish and the Bottleman picked up the BBC Introducing award for Best New Act, before playing live for the crowd. Chris Martin opened the show from the dressings rooms of the stars, performing the opening lines of Sky Full of Stars, before being welcomed into London's Earls Court by a shower of confetti and screams.

Sam Smith played his hit single Stay With Me via Satellite, while Tom Jones and Paloma Faith sang the Beach Boys' God Only Knows - the song that was used to launch the BBC Music brand earlier this year.

Calvin Harris, One Direction and Clean Bandit also performed.
