Pitch Perfect Was Nearly Terrible

With the trailer for Pitch Perfect 2 finally out in the open, excitement for the sequel to 2012's big sleeper hit is higher than ever. But, according to its star Anna Kendrick, it all could have been very different.

In an interesting new interview, the actor has revealed that the movie was originally supposed to take a much more romance-centred direction; focussing less on the female a capella group, the Barden Bellas, and more on lead character Beca's love life. BORING.

“There was this scene that got deleted anyway, but originally the low point in my character's journey was supposed to be when I found out this guy I vaguely had a crush on at the radio station had a girlfriend,” she told TIME. “And I was like, ‘;That sucks.' And I fought so hard that my low point could be that I didn't think that I was ever going to get any real responsibility at the radio station.”

She went on: “I think that we ended up on a mixed version of the two. The scene got deleted anyway, so it's a moot point. But yeah. I was like, ‘;That's garbage!' It can't just be like, ‘;Oh, my crush has a girlfriend. I guess I was wrong about anything.'” Sounds pretty hideous, but it seems the wrongs were finally put right in the editing room.

“They just realised in the edits very quickly that it was all about the girls and spending time with the girls,” Kendrick continued. “So that was an awesome direction that it ended up taking. And I'm excited we're revisiting that in Pitch Perfect 2." That sequel - which also sees the returns of Anna Camp, Brittany Snow and Rebel Wilson - is out in May 2015, and we're counting down the days already.

Yesterday's trailer arrived hand-in-hand with a spread for Entertainment Weekly, in which actor-turned-director Elizabeth Banks acknowledged how much higher the stakes are this time around compared to the "pretty modest" opening of the original. And she's right: yesterday's first trailer has already had upwards of 5 million views on YouTube and more than 7 million on Facebook. Now that is aca-awesome.
