Chris Martin Reveals Katy Perry Inspired ‘A Sky Full Of Stars’ by Coldplay

They might be one of the biggest bands in the world but Chris Martin has revealed that Coldplay aren't too big to still find inspiration from other artists, most namely Dark Horse hitmaker Katy Perry!

Appearing in a new Beat x Beat webcast produced by Beats by Dre, the Coldplay frontman explained the creative process behind their popular track A Sky Full of Stars and revealed that Perry was their, erm, muse, if you will.

Whe asked what really helped to spark their chart-topping track, Chris said," I'll tell you the truth: I was listening to a lot of Katy Perry."

Yes, we're talking about the same bright-haired star that likes kissing girls, dressing like carb-induced treats and has an alter ego named Kitty Purry.

"A lot of her songs have the same chord sequence the whole time. Your body feels comfortable with them and then the melody's changing on top so there's a groove you really get in to and then also you're kept interested... so I was like, 'that's an amazing way of doing songs," Chris explained.

Although Katy helped ignite the group's inital layout for the track, the singer also sared that electronic dance music played a fair share in the piecing together of the track, too.

"That song really ended up being inspired by EDM, which some people turn their nose up and then you go to see an EDM thing and people are together and having the best time," he added. "So I was like f**k it! I love that stuff. So I wanted to have a song that comes from that world. But in terms of, 'I'd really like to jump up and down to this,' we don't really know what we're doing."

That's when the Coldplay lads enlisted the help of EDM mastermind Avicii, who stepped in to collaborate with the band and help shape the song. "He did a full Avicii version, we did a full Coldplay version, and we spend weeks weaving it all together," Chris added.

So, there you go folks! All you need to make a hit track is inspiration from a kooky popstar, a desire to have fans "jump up and down" and a bit of tweaking from one the world's biggest DJs. Easy, right?
