During her performance at iHeartRadio Music Festival on Saturday, September 24, the “Born This Way” hitmaker dedicated her single “Hair” to a 14-year-old gay teen named Jamey Rodemeyer. The boy had sent a thank you message to the singer before committing suicide after being a target of bullying.
“I just wanted to take a moment because we lost a little monster this week,” GaGa said at the Las Vegas gig. “I wrote this record about how your identity is really all you’ve got when you’re in school… so tonight, Jamey, I know you’re up there looking at us, and you’re not a victim.”
The “Judas” singer went on adding, “You’re a lesson to all of us. I know it’s a bit of a downer, but sometimes the right thing is more important than the music.” At one point, the 25-year-old eccentric singer said to the audience, “Bullying is for losers. Put your hands up for Jamey!”
Jamey was found dead on September 17 outside his house in Buffalo, New York. According to the police, the cause of his death was self-inflicted, but they won’t reveal how he ended his life.
Before he died, Jamey posted several YouTube videos where he spoke about his love to the “Bad Romance” songstress. “Lady GaGa, she makes me so happy, and she lets me know that I was born this way,” he said in one of his videos. Shortly before he killed himself, the teen also took to his Twitter, writing a message to his idol, “Bye mother monster, thank you for all you have done, paws up forever.”
In a series of tweets, GaGa shared about her anger at the bullying case that caused the death of Jamey. “The past days I’ve spent reflecting, crying, and yelling. I have so much anger. It is hard to feel love when cruelty takes someones life,” she wrote, before adding, “Jamey Rodemeyer, 14 yrs old, took his life because of bullying. Bullying must become be illegal. It is a hate crime.” She also tweeted that she plans to meet President Obama to discuss the issue.
