Vanilla Ice was only 16 when he hit it big with “Ice Ice Baby.” Now he’s got advice for another teen sensation, Justin Bieber, saying his success probably won’t last.
Real name Rob Van Winkle, Ice has enjoyed renewed success thanks to his hit DIY network show “The Vanilla Ice Project,” which sees him trading rhymes for remodeling. But before that, he was another young star who saw how it could all change in the blink of an eye.
“I mean, I did ‘Ice Ice Baby’ when I was 16. So I can kind of relate a bit,” Vanilla Ice told HuffPost Celebrity about Justin Bieber. “Sold over a hundred million records. And I had a weekend that lasted about three years, and I didn’t know who I was, what’s my purpose in life.”
What followed was career suicide with poorly received albums, drugs, an attempt at real suicide, and even worse, a stint on “The Surreal Life.” But luckily he’s rebounded with his hit show, and now a role in the Adam Sandler comedy “I Hate You Dad,” plus work on a new album.
But now Ice is sharing some of his learned lessons with 17-year-old Bieber, who’s already got hit albums, a movie, and sold-out tours under his belt.
“So my prediction about Bieber is that he’s going to go through one of those weekends that lasts a few years because he’s had such success as a child act,” Vanilla Ice said.
“You know, then something else new will come along and he’ll be forgotten and he can try to put all the pieces back together, so it’s going to be entertaining to watch,” he added.
Justin, who’s work on a new album and just released his first fragrance, and his fans might disagree. But of course, as the Biebs would say, never say never.
