Lea Michele, Chris Colfer and Cory Monteith to Leave ‘Glee’

Ryan Murphy is going to write a graduation for Rachel Berry, Kurt Hummel and Finn Hudson from McKinley High because he wants to be realistic.Lea Michele, Chris Colfer and Cory Monteith will leave “Glee” at the end of the upcoming third season. The Fox hit series’ creator Ryan Murphy broke the news in a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, confirming that Rachel Berry, Kurt Hummel and Finn Hudson “are not going back at all for Season 4” because they will graduate from McKinley High.

“You can keep them on the show for six years and people will criticize you for not being realistic,” Murphy explained. He continued, “Or you can be really true to life and say when they started the show they were very clearly sophomores and they should graduate at the end of their senior year.”

Murphy also said “more characters are leaving than are staying”, hinting that more New Directions member will join Rachel, Kurt and Finn in the elimination list. “We’ve never done anything by the book,” he said before stating that those who are graduating and staying will be revealed on the premiere of season 3 on September 20.

“We made that decision and I involved Chris and Lea and they thought that was a good idea,” Murphy said of the graduation idea. “They both trust the writing and trust me and felt that it would be great to have an open and closed experience for them to go out while they were on top.”

Specifically, Murphy talked about his plan for Rachel Berry’s plot. “I’m much more interested in Lea’s character, not so much on her relationship with Finn, but more on what her dreams are beyond high school and how she plans on getting them,” he dished on. “That’s what my senior year was about.”

While he has already discussed his idea with Lea and Chris, Murphy admitted that he hasn’t reached out to Monteith, but he’s sure that the Canadian actor is aware that Finn is going to leave high school by the end of the season. “He knows he was a sophomore when the show started,” so Murphy said.

Aside from Michele, Colfer and Monteith who won’t return for the fourth season, there is another actor who has been confirmed to get the boot as a regular. A few weeks ago, Chord Overstreet is announced to leave the upcoming third season. Still, there’s a possibility that the Sam Evans depicter might appear as an occasional guest star. On his departure from the series, Overstreet tweeted, “It’s been a good year. Too bad it’s over. Time for summer and starting fresh.”
