Katy Perry gives Vancouver fans a sugar rush

Katy Perry has her unwavering confidence to thank for the giant, cotton candy Cloud Nine she’s been riding since her breakthrough single I Kissed A Girl hit the airwaves in 2008.

Sure, her blue wigs and cupcake bras are hot. Her cleavage-parading outfits and volcanic stage fireworks are titillating. But in the end, Perry’s most attractive quality isn’t her outrageous fashion sense or larger-than-life concerts.

Perry’s international appeal boils down to her unabashed and sometimes goofy character.

The 26-year-old American pop superstar, born Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson, proved to a sold-out Rogers Arena Tuesday night that sexy doesn’t always equal Daisy Duke bikinis and smooching the cherry lip gloss off your ladyfriends. Although the chart-topper definitely flaunted her svelte shape in cute Candyland-inspired latex dresses, it was Perry’s quirky, comedic and perhaps awkward personality that melted the popsicles of 14,000 fans.

As proved by some of her more unique music videos, Katy Perry’s got guts. She’s got spunk. And she’s not afraid to put herself out there. One minute the Grammy Award-winning artist is spraying whipped cream out of her bra, singing alongside reefer king Snoop Dogg in California Gurls. The next, she’s a geeky mess of poofy hair and headgear, slurping back the spit between her braces as she mourns a broken solar system diorama in Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.).

Perry’s fearlessness made an appearance onstage Tuesday night. It shone through all of her glittering costumes and surfed over the sea of swirling lollipops. Add in two albums’ worth of catchy, saccharine pop songs and you’ve got a gig that’s more fun than waking up in Vegas.

The crowd consisted mainly of young girls sporting blue wigs and sparkling bikini tops. Thanks to the buckets of cotton candy they were selling in the Arena, the entire place was doused in a sugary scent that left everyone with a high even before the show started.

It all began with a video intro, featuring a pretty Perry on a mission to find a sweeter life. The first few notes of Teenage Dream, off of the 2010 album of the same name, preceded her grand entrance onto the stage. The audience’s squeals followed close behind.

The set-up was magical. Pink fluffy clouds floated above the candy cane-striped stage. From the moment she stepped into the wonderland, you could tell Perry was smitten with her audience. The singer, who is married to British comedian Russell Brand, beamed at her fans as she swiveled her hips in a sparkling white dress adorned with candy drops. Giggling girls cheered back in between singing the chorus to Hummingbird Heartbeat.

“Vancouver! I’ll be your host this evening. I’m Katy Perry. Hi,” she deadpanned.

“This is my last show in Canada. I’ve saved the best for last. Who brought their best friend tonight?” she asked, and the proceeded to make a joke about how best girl buds call each other s-l-u-t-s.

Although there were many pre-teens in the audience, the show wasn’t exactly PG. The former Christian artist and daughter of two pastors got a bit naughty. She belted out the mischievous lyrics to UR So Gay, referenced marijuana brownies, spoke of getting wild after drinking too many adult beverages, and eventually stripped down into a blue onesie for Peacock.

Then, she draped herself in an assortment of feather boas and searched the audience for a “Vancouver boyfriend.”

“Honey, you’re 12,” she told one boy who took up the offer. “Do you want me to go to jail?”

Perry eventually found her Vancouver boyfriend. Then she made him take his shirt off before planting a wet one on his cheek and diving into her infamous hit, I Kissed A Girl.

Props go to Katy Perry for being her wacky self and putting it in the spotlight. Her unique personality was contagious and her show was the right combination of glitter and talent. There’s no doubt that Katy Perry fulfilled a teenage dream for all in attendance.

Opener Janelle Monae, an Atlanta-based R&B songstress, pulled in a considerable crowd before Perry’s confectionary fantasy began. However, aside from her jazzy Chevrolet commercial tune Tightrope, not many heads perked up at the performer. They were more interested in the wild souvenirs–such as light-up cotton candy, flashing headbands and glowsticks–being paraded up and down the aisles.

Her set was a brief 30 minutes, but nonetheless enjoyable for those who’ve heard her 2010 studio debut The ArchAndroid. Dressed in snazzy suits, Monae and her band successfully funkified the building with a cover of Michael Jackson’s I Want You Back. She was a welcome, savory treat to have before the sugar overload that was to come.
