It’s the immigration officers at LAX that I’m worried about. These guys make the Queen’s Guards look like the Chuckle Brothers. Yet it’s their resolutely humourless faces that’ll greet the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge when they touch down in Los Angeles tomorrow. “Business or pleasure?” they’ll interrogate, as Wills presses his royal digits to the fingerprint scanner. “A little of both,” HRH will reply, eyes on his new bride, “right, Babykins?”
Their hopeful smiles and cheery tones will fall on deaf ears (never being allowed to leave his box, the immigration officer may well be the only person in California not to recognise the royal couple). But once outside – where California governor Jerry Brown will await the pair alongside the thousands expected to line the streets – the couple dubbed “triple A-listers” by Angelenos can expect a very different welcome.
“The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge view this as a working visit,” a palace spokesman has warned of the two-day trip – Kate’s first to the US, and Wills’s first on official duty – “not as an opportunity for them to meet celebrities.” Which is rather like visiting the Krispy Kreme factory while professing a desire not to come into contact with doughnuts.
Because the truth is that whether you like yours glazed, iced or fat-free, LA has little else to offer but celebrities. And there’s only one lofty thought on locals’ minds this week: meeting William and Kate.
“It’s astonishing how starstruck the whole showbiz community is by them both – Kate in particular,” laughs actress Alice Evans, a British expat bemused by royal mania. “The wedding was the most talked-about event on US TV in a long time, and ever since there’s been a whole new star system in place, with real British royalty ranking well above Hollywood royalty.”
