The royal couple will be bypassing trips to Disneyland and the Kodak Theater this weekend in L.A., and instead will dive straight into charity work after touching down this afternoon. Promptly after disembarking from a plane in Los Angeles – which we have confirmed will be between 3 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. Pacific Standard Time – the couple will be greeted by Gov. Jerry Brown then whisked off to Variety’s Venture Capital and New Media Summit. The event will feature London’s “Tech City” initiative – think Silicone Valley in Britain – and a variety of up-and-coming tech buffs and companies.
Saturday will be the most glamorous day of the couple’s stay, with a red-carpet affair for the British Academy of Film and Television Arts. Earlier in the day, William and Kate will attend a charity polo match at the Santa Barbara Polo & Racquet Club. William will join in the fun and games, and Kate is scheduled to present the prize trophy to the winning team. Tickets are $4,000 a pop and include a chance to rub elbows with the prince and the duchess. The proceeds will be donated to charity, and if the couple’s wedding is any indication, the two have a talent for raising funds for their pet causes — they raised $1.7 million in lieu of gifts, according to People.
For William, the welfare of servicemen and women is a personal priority – in 2008 he helped raise more than $1 million for Headley Court military hospital and the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association.
On Sunday, William and Kate will attend a veteran and military spouse hiring fair and service project, “Hiring our Heroes Los Angeles,” at Sony Pictures Studios. There they will help put together 1,000 care packages for military children with Blue Star Families and the USO.
Before that, the couple will visit downtown L.A.’s Skid Row area, where they will watch a dance performance at a nonprofit performing arts academy for impoverished communities.
