During the show, a doctor explained that Lauren "blew out one of her vocal cords" during rehearsal. "Her vocal cords were really rough and sprained, kind of like a runner with a badly sprained ankle. We gave her a lot of medicine," said Dr. Shawn Nassari. Lauren herself told host Ryan Seacrest, "I'm here, I'm ready to sing and I'm fine."

The competition began as Scotty sang Montgomery Gentry's "Gone". Lauren came in following with Carrie Underwood's "Flat on the Floor". Randy Jackson and Jennifer Lopez agreed to give the first round to Scotty, as Randy said that Lauren proved she is in it to win it, and Jennifer gave her a standing ovation.

On the second round, the two finalists performed songs that were picked by their own idols. Scotty's idol George Strait chose "Check Yes or No" for him. Lauren's idol Carrie, meanwhile, picked "Maybe It Was Memphis". The judges thought the second round went to Lauren with Randy saying, "She connect better to an undercurrent of emotion."

In round three, Scotty delivered a romantic ballad that he'll release if he wins the competition,"I Love You This Big". Producer Jimmy Iovine said that it was "a big moment and a big song, and you've got a big voice." His third performance has once again impressed the judges. Randy claimed, "The range was great" while Jennifer enthused, "A really amazing" and Steven Tyler added, "You nailed it again."

Lauren closed the evening by singing a song called "Like My Mother Does" and making it an emotional tribute to her mother. Afterward, she said, "I feel great. My mom is crying though, but she's always beautiful no matter what." Touched by the performance, J.Lo told her, "This is a very tight race tonight, but Lauren, with that song, you may have just won." Randy and Steven decided to gave the last round to Lauren as Steven said, "Sorry Scotty, Lauren gets it hands down."
