Rich People Making Poor Decisions: 65-Year-Old Billionaire Diamond Trader Dies During Penis Enlargement Surgery

A billionaire diamond trader who traveled to Paris for a penis enhancement surgery died after he had a heart attack while he was under the knife.

According to The Sun, citing Belgian media reports, 65-year-old Ehud Arye Laniado ultimately died from complications during surgery.

The Belgian-Israeli dual national didn’t react well to a substance that was injected into his penis, and he suffered a heart attack. He died right then and there on the operating table, the Sun reported.

Local media reports suggested the man suffered from a “Napoleon complex” due to his short stature.

An old friend of Laniado’s, who wished to remain anonymous, said that the man was known as “the Argentinian because he looked liked a tango danger.”

The old friend said the height-challenged man was “always focused on his appearance an how others perceived him.”

In fact, Laniado was reportedly so egotistical that he asked his accountant to read out his bank statement “multiple times a day” to make him feel better about himself and to help him forget that about his height deficiency.

The billionaire diamond trader reportedly owned one of the most expensive penthouses in Monaco, as well as a house in Bel-Air, where he loved to drink bottles of Chateau Margaux with models and celebrities

Laniado didn’t go to college, according to local media reports, but that didn’t stop him from attaining a massive fortune in the billions.

“It turned out that he did have some talents,” explained one friend. “Internationally, he was one of the biggest experts in valuing raw diamonds.”

In 2015, Laniado reportedly sold the world’s most expensive diamond, called the Blue Moon of Josephine, for $48.4million to Hong Kong businessman and convicted felon Joseph Lau Luen Hung.

Laniado, whose net worth is unknown, and a business partner got into trouble for tax evasion in 2013—two years before that big diamond sale, and the pair were forced to hand over more than $5 billion USD in taxes, penalties and fees.

His company, Omega Diamonds, confirmed his death in a statement via Facebook Tuesday afternoon.

“Farewell to a visionary businessman,” the statement read. “It is with great sadness that we confirm that our founder Ehud Arye Laniado has passed away. After living an exceptional life Ehud will be brought back home to Israel as his final resting place. He will be dearly missed by us all.”
