Kendrick Lamar proposes to high school sweetheart

Major congratulations are in order for Kendrick Lamar who is engaged to his high school sweetheart, Whitney Alford. The Poetic Justice hitmaker revealed the happy news in an interview with Power 105.1 radio show The Breakfast Club on Friday (Apr 3), confirming the rumours by saying, "Yeah, definitely. I'm loyal to the soil."

It's been a good start to the year for the 27-year-old, who has been planning his wedding whilst celebrating the news that he's landed his first ever UK number one album. To Pimp A Butterfly, which he worked on with Dr Dre, Pharrell Williams, Flying Lotus and Thundercat also broke Spotify records, knocking Michael Buble from the Spotify throne to claim the fastest-streamed album ever. Back in February, the star also bagged a Grammy award, walking away with best rap performance for his single, I.

When he was congratulated on his engagement, Kendrick said, "[I] appreciate that. At the end of the day, you want to always, always have real people around you, period. Whether it's male or female, and everybody that's been around me, they've been around since day one... I always show respect when respect has been given, and people that have been by your side, you're supposed to honor that."

Kendrick and Whitney met in high school, and have been dating for nearly ten years, but have managed to keep their relationship out of the public eye. In a rare conversation about his now-fiance, he told the New York Times that she was the one person in his life who had the power to call him out. "She's been here since day 1," he explained.

Speaking to Billboard in January, he elaborated, saying, "I wouldn't even call her my girl. That's my best friend. I don't even like the term that society has put in the world as far as being a companion—she's somebody I can tell my fears to."
