Oscars 2015: How Did The Brits Do?

The nominations for the 2015 Oscars has been announced and thanks to Benedict Cumberbatch and co, the Brits have fared pretty well with a total of nine nominations. With the ceremony being held in the early morning in LA, everyone in the UK was wide awake to hear who had been nominated for what.

Having gone up against each other at the Golden Globes on Sunday night, Benedict and Eddie Redmayne have been pitted against each other once again for the category for actor in a leading role. Benedict got the nod for his role as Alan Turing in The Imitation Game and Eddie for his portrayal of Stephen Hawking in The Theory Of Everything. Speaking about his nomination, Eddie told Sky News: "You know as you can imagine, it's our job as actors to tell interesting stories about interesting people. They don't come more extraordinary than Stephen Hawking. When I was first cast the most important thing was to educate myself. I went to a numerology clinic in London and met with a specialist there who introduced me to people suffering from motor neurone disease and they were so generous and kind."

But hey, it's not all about the guys as both Keira Knightley and Rosamund Pike also had their names read out. Rosamund's nomination in the best actress category came as a result of her role as Amy Dunne in Gillian Flynn's big screen adaptation of her book, Gone Girl. However, Rosamund isn't the only Brit in that category as Felicity Jones' name was also called out for her role in The Theory Of Everything. Revealing that she let her family know about her nomination straight away, the Mail Online reported Felicity saying: "It's really exciting to be nominated with this group of British actors. I'm sitting in my pyjamas calling family and friends. I've spoken to my mother, my father and my brother."

Keira Knightley scored her actress in a supporting role nomination for her her role as Joan Clarke in The Imitation Game.

Director Mike Leigh's Mr Turner also had reason to celebrate as the film landed four nominations. They were in music, production design, cinematography and costume design. But despite this, the film's cast, including lead actor Timonthy Spall and actress Marion Bailey failed to get recognised.

Sadly, it wasn't a great morning for former Spooks actor David Oyelowo when he failed to score a nomination for his role as Martin Luther King Jr in Selma, which was anticipated to do well at the awards.

The Oscars, which will be hosted by Neil Patrick Harris, will take place on February 22 in Los Angeles.
