Anne Hathaway Talking About Her Post-Oscars Backlash Will Make You Feel Very, Very Bad

When she won an Academy Award in 2013 for her spellbinding turn in Les Miserables, Anne Hathaway wasn't so much the darling of Hollywood as she was a target for a hell of a lot of online negativity.

Whether you tittered at someone else's comment or even made a few yourself about how annoying you found her (heck, even if you've loved her all along), you'll feel incredibly bad when you see her talking about the whole thing on Ellen DeGeneres' show this week - serving a timely reminder that, despite the internet's ability to let people hide behind a keyboard, there's a real person reading it at the other side.

Watch below.

Explaining that she was researching celebrity pregnancy rumours for a possible sketch when she stumbled across an article entitled 'Why does everybody hate Anne Hathaway?', she said: “I listened at first, and I couldn't help it. You try to shut it off and I couldn't.

"Then I realised why I couldn't... I hadn't learned to love myself yet. I hadn't got there. And if you don't love yourself when someone else says horrible things to you, a part of you is always going to believe them."

She added: "So then it was like, ‘;OK, I don't wanna believe these people. I don't wanna agree with them on any level. I wanna figure out who I am… I don't wanna feel like I'm fragile because I'm so dependent on what other people think about me'. So I took a step back, and as Matthew [McConaughey] would say, I just kept living!"

Conceding that she is now much more comfortable in her own skin, the star added: "I have a tremendous amount of love and compassion for everyone else, and most of all I have it for myself." Preach!

Interstellar, in which Anne stars alongside Jessica Chastain and McConaughey, is out now. Read EntertainmentWise's verdict here.
