They set out to diagnose engine problems in their 2005 Porsche Carrera GT, however Paul Walker and Roger Rodas never returned from their test drive.

According to Los Angeles County Sheriff’s detective Jeff Maag, the “Fast and Furious” star and his race car driver buddy ended up traveling in excess of 90 miles per hour when they crashed on Saturday (November 30).

Maag told People, “The driver was doing well over [the posted speed limit of] 45 [mph]- it’s fair to say at least twice that.”

Furthermore, the police will likely need a week or two to complete their investigation into exactly how fast the car was traveling and the contributing mechanical issues that may have caused the deadly accident.

Friend Antonio Holmes added, "For that car to disintegrate the way it did, speed, of course [was a factor], but something went wrong and it put them at an angle to the curb. There's not a shadow of a doubt in my mind, it wasn’t driver error."

To help the process, Detective Maag hopes to find a black box. "Porsche seems to think it has one. They put them in all different locations [in the car]. We have to dig for it. We may have to send [it] to Germany to be downloaded, or perhaps we can plug it into another Porsche GT and be able to read it from that."

If it works, “it will give us the speed, whether they were wearing their seat belts, all kinds of information 25 seconds before the collision and 5 seconds after."
