Melissa McCarthy Responds to “Female Hippo” Comment in “Identity Thief” Review

Hollywood is a fickle place to be, especially when it comes to the overbearing standards of being stick thin, but hilarious actress Melissa McCarthy isn't letting the critics bring her down.

Back in February, when the 42-year-old's hit film "Identity Thief" was released, New York Observer critic Rex Reed caused a media firestorm when he called the comedic star "tractor-sized" and a "female hippo" in a review of the flick.

Now addressing the comments herself, McCarthy told the New York Times she first thought, “Really? Why would someone O.K. that?”

Taking the high road, Melissa added that she “felt really bad for someone who is swimming in so much hate. I just thought, that’s someone who’s in a really bad spot, and I am in such a happy spot.”

Older and wiser now, the "Bridesmaid" actress expressed that she would have been "crushed" by the comment in her 20's but now she is more concerned with "all those younger girls, that are not in a place in their life where they can say, ‘That doesn’t reflect on me.’"
