Nike has safely gone back to the future for a special mission– to benefit Parkinson’s disease.
Nike has teamed up with the Michael J. Fox Foundation and has created a near-replica of the glowing pair of shoes worn in the 1989 film “Back to the Future II.” Only 1,500 of the 2011 Nike Air Mag sneakers will be available.
The limited edition sneakers have a strap with the glowing Nike name that lights up for up to five hours. They also come with the satisfaction that they have contributed to a worthy cause.
Nike will auction the sneakers on eBay, with proceeds benefiting the Michael J. Fox Parkinson’s foundation. Fox played Marty McFly in the iconic films and wore the original glowing sneakers during time travel to the year 2015. Fox was diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 1991.
The auction began on Thursday and will run until Sept. 18.
Parkinson disease is a neurological disease that increases in severity over time. It affects mobility and speech, and can cause stiffness and tremors. The mean age of onset is 60, but it can strike earlier. At least 6 million people worldwide suffer with the disease.
