‘Contagion’ Kills at Weekend Box Office With $23M Sales


Time Warner Inc.’s “Contagion,” an action-thriller about a global deadly disease, led this weekend’s box office receipt sales with $23.1 million in the U.S. and Canada.

Director Steven Soderbergh’s new film begins with Gwyneth Paltro’s character becoming the first victim of a disease that soon begins appearing in populations all across the world. It examines just how the SARS-like disease featured in the film affects not only our immune systems but our psyches as well.

Contagion also stars Matt Damon, Kate Winslet, Laurence Fishburne, Marion Cotillard and Jennifer Ehle.

The inspirational interracial drama by Warner Bros., “The Help,” fell down to second slot after three weeks at No. 1, raking in $8.6 million in ticket sales this weekend. This movie had earned $137.1 million since opening Aug. 10. The movie nonetheless scored the longest daily run in the top spot at 25 days since The Sixth Sense in 1999.
