Tom Brady morning radio appearance

AP AFC CHAMPIONSHIP FOOTBALL S FBN USA MA
Tom Brady said the Deflategate controversy was ridiculous and that he doesn’t “even respond to stuff like this.”

Brady wasn’t defiant, but he seemed irked with the questions, as if it was ridiculous that he had to stand on a podium and answer questions about the pressure per square inch of a football.

1. He didn’t say much.
What, did you expect him to confess to him and Gisele lurking in the bowels of Gillette Stadium, sticking needles in the game footballs with a pressure gauge to make sure they were the perfect 9.8 PSI? Brady’s press conference was as predictable as can be. He said he didn’t alter any footballs in any way. He said he picked out footballs before the game (24 in total) that were “perfect” and that’s what he expects when he shows up on the field. It’s a piece of equipment, he said, like a kid’s baseball glove. He says he chooses him game balls and tries to break them in beforehand.

2. He may have parsed his words.
“I didn’t alter any football in any way,” Brady said. Later, he said he couldn’t say that no one in the locker room changed the balls, an obvious statement because Brady isn’t omnipotent.

3. There was no criticism, implicit or explicit, of Bill Belichick.
Brady didn’t bite when asked about Belichick’s presser. He said the whole team was confused. What he chose not to say was that Belichick could have defended his quarterback’s honor and integrity. Belichick could have given a vote of confidence. He could have done all this without confirming that Brady did or did not have a role in Deflategate. But he didn’t. He got behind the wheel of a bus instead.

4. He’s not going to be Encyclopedia Brown.
Brady was asked whether he should find out why the balls were deflated. He said he had questions but “there’s nobody I know that can answer the questions I have.’

5. Brady didn’t notice any difference between the deflated balls on the first half and the inflated balls of the second half.
“It wasn’t even an inkling of a concern of mine that they were different. I just assumed they were the same.”

6. He doesn’t think he’s a cheater.
“I don’t believe so. I feel like I’ve always played within the rules. I would never do anything to break the rules. I believe in fair play and I respect the league.”

7. He’s changed his tune.
In addition to calling the charges ridiculous and vowing not to respond, Brady also told WEEI: “I think I’ve heard it all at this point. That’s the last of my worries.” A few hundred reporters at the Super Bowl will beg to differ next week.

8. Brady thinks the Pats fairly won the AFC championship.
When asked if he wanted to apologize, Brady implied he had nothing to apologize for, though he wasn’t flippant about it. He simply said this wasn’t his fault.

9. He’s looking ahead to playing the Seattle Seahawks in the Super Bowl.
If sanctions are to be had, they won’t come from Brady. His job is to prepare for the Super Bowl and that’s what he said he’s going to do.
