X Factor 2014: Lauren Platt Fails To Impress, Is She Facing The Chop?

According to the bookmakers, The X Factor's Lauren Platt is in trouble this week, and after a lacklustre opening performance, it seems they could be right.

Before the show, Paddy Power placed her odds at 5/6 to be the next eliminated contestant. And earlier this week, Louis Walsh echoed this sentiment, telling Digital Spy that she would “absolutely” be leaving this week.

The 17-year-old needed to win over the audience with her cover of East 17's Stay Another Day. But whilst the show was Christmas themed, the judges definitely weren't getting into the festive spirit. “I thought you struggled a little bit. I like you, I didn't like the song,” Louis sighed. And whilst Mel B disagreed, her comments weren't exactly positive. “I did like the song. I'm still waiting for you to take it. You've been consistent but I haven't seen you peak.”

But Lauren, who found herself in the bottom two last week with Stereo Kicks, found an unlikely supporter in Simon Cowell, who mused, “I love that song I thought it was a great choice. I think last week Lauren, last week did affect you. It was a good performance, it wasn't a great performance but you've got a killer song coming up.”

With a slew of negative comments and hardly any support from the crowd, Lauren was looking pretty down on her luck. But, determined to give it all she had, the aspiring star covered Story of My Life with gusto. Aside from sounding extremely faint she managed to remain pitch perfect as she belted out the One Direction hit, and even managed to win over the judges. Louis claimed he “loved” the cover, adding that the second song was “much better” than her first.

Mel was on hand to offer some constructive criticism, telling Lauren that her vocals were “on point,” but stressed that she was still waiting for the teenager to let loose and give a performance some “oomph.” Cheryl, meanwhile, seemed to have realised that her act could be facing the chop and pleaded with young girls in the country to pick up the phone and vote for Lauren. She told the viewers that Lauren had proved that dreams can come true, and begged voters to help her act make it through to the final.

But with a shaky start and a lukewarm reception, it seems pretty likely that Lauren could be leaving in tomorrow night's show. Do you think Lauren will survive this week? Let us know in the comments.

The X Factor continues on Sunday night at 8pm on ITV.
