Eddie Redmayne ‘Beyond Thrilled’ Over Golden Globe Nomination

It's going to be a good award season for the Brits as Benedict Cumberbatch, David Oyelowo and Eddie Redmayne have all been nominated for the 2015 Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Drama. at the January 11th ceremony, it was confirmed today.

The Golden Globes awards 2015 nominations were revealed in full today in Los Angeles by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association with both Benedict (The Imitation Game) and Eddie (The Theory of Life) adding another nomination to the Screen Actors Guild nods they received yesterday. Steve Carell (Foxcatcher) and Jake Gyllenhaal (Nightcrawler) make up the category, dominated by the British talent. The winner will be awarded on Sunday, January 11 2015 in the first big award night of the season.

Benedict is favourite to sweep the board in the 2015 award season for his role as mathematician Alan Turing and the heartbreaking tale of his life. Turing led a team of code-breakers at Bletchley Park during World War II, where he developed a machine to break the seemingly "unbreakable" Nazi Enigma code. His efforts are believed to have ended the war by two years, though he was never honoured in his lifetime. The Imitation Game, which pays tribute to the secret code-breakers, did well overall, scoring five nominations in total including a Best Supporting Actress in a Drama nomination for Keira Knightley.

Coincidentally, it's another British genius who is the subject of Eddie Redmayne's The Theory Of Everything, which received three nominations in total. Depicting the early years of theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking it follows the extraordinary man through his diagnosis of motor neuron disease and his success in physics. Based on the memoir 'Travelling to Infinity: My Life with Stephen' by his first wife, Jane Wilde Hawking, it follows their romance after meeting at Cambridge University in the 1960s. Felicity Jones, who plays Jane in the movie also received a Best Actress in a Drama nomination.

Speaking after the news of his nomination Eddie said in an official statement: “I was in the middle of attempting to do all my holiday shopping in a day when I got the call. I am beyond thrilled to be nominated alongside such a stunning quartet of actors. The fact that Felicity, Jóhann, and the film are nominated means the world. I am hugely grateful to the HFPA – and to Professor Stephen Hawking for his personal support in helping me to share his story with the world.”

While Eddie and Benedict have been the most talked about when it comes to award season, Selma's David Oyelowo disappointingly missed out on a SAG Award nomination for his portrayal of Martin Luther King Jnr. yesterday. The film has fared better at the Globes, picking up four nominations including Best Motion Picture, Drama. Depicting the events of the 1965 Selma to Montgomery voting rights marches, the intense picture also got a nod for Ava DuVernay in the Best Director category.
