Philip Seymour Hoffman’s “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1” Footage is All Real

Though there was talk of employing holograms to help fill in the gaps after Philip Seymour Hoffman passed away, it turns out the “Hunger Game: Mockingjay Part 1” final cut only contains actual shots of the late actor.

According to director Francis Lawrence, every time Plutarch Heavensbee appears onscreen it’s really him. “We’re not creating anything digital. We’re only using real footage. Phil shows us who Plutarch really is.”

Costar Mahershala Ali added, “He was terrific: deep, thoughtful, smart and enormously talented. Even a scene that seemed simple, he would try to find something deeper.”

“He’d stop for a good 45 minutes, and we’d all hash it out to get a grasp of the characters. I’ve never seen someone work a scene like he did. He cared passionately, and I’ll keep that with me for the rest of my life.”

Even Josh Hutcherson benefitted from Hoffman’s presence- “There are very few actors in history who actually become each character like he did. He is one of the actors I’ve looked up to my entire life.”
