Leonardo DiCaprio to turn Oscar nominations into a win with new movie?

We've been rooting for Leonardo DiCaprio for years, but so far the actor has yet to land the biggest prize in Hollywood - an Oscar. But could his rumoured new role finally be his ticket to the Academy Awards podium?

Rumours are flying that the the 40-year-old is in talks to join the Joy Mangano biopic, the real life story of a single mum turned multimillionaire inventor, which has already lined up an award winning team. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Leo is in negotiations to join Jennifer Lawrence, who has already been cast as Joy in the true-story drama which will be helmed by David O. Russell. Russell is of course the director who led Jen to Oscar glory in 2013 with Silver Linings Playbook, as well as landing her another nomination for this year's American Hustle.

While there's no confirmed casting for Leo yet, THR claim the actor has expressed an interest to star in the movie, currently called Joy. The film is still in pre-production mode so both sides have got time to make their minds up. Russell is reportedly working hard on tidying up the script originally drafted by Annie Mumolo (of Bridesmaids), with the rejigs reportedly including the inclusion of a male lead role more enticing to a big star like DiCaprio. The director is also said to be expanding the supporting role of a QVC executive for his Silver Linings and Hustle star Bradley Cooper. And he also wants Robert De Niro to sign up as Mangano's father.

Jennifer has already pretty much confirmed she'll star in the biopic, telling Live! With Kelly and Michael in May of Russell's vision: "He recently texted me at, I think, 4 in the morning, and was like, 'I think I want to make a movie about the woman who invented the . . . [Miracle] Mop. You want to do it?' And I was like, yeah. I could just imagine David just, like, looking at somebody mopping and being like, 'Yeah, that's my next screenplay,' " she explained.

Joy is tentatively set for a Christmas Day 2015 release, perfect timing for the 2016 Oscar race, so could Leo be the next star Russell leads to Academy Award glory? The actor is no stranger to the Oscars, having scored his fourth nod this year for the Martin Scorsese team-up The Wolf of Wall Street. It wasn't to be though as Matthew McConaughey's Dallas Buyers Club performance clinched the award.

Leo's best loser's face at this year's Oscars

It's the same old story for Leo who's first Oscar nomination came when he was just a teenager for What's Eating Gilbert Grape in 1994, which he followed up with nods for The Aviator in 2005 and Blood Diamond in 2007 before The Wolf of Wall Street.

Earlier this year there was hope for another big Oscar contender when Leo signed up for
Danny Boyle's Steve Jobs biopic. Boyle took home the Best Picture and Best Director Oscars (as well as six others) for Slumdog Millionaire in 2009. But Leo later dropped out of Boyle's Jobs biopic, amid rumours he was retiring from the acting game. The star later disputed the retirement rumours, and with the Joy reports perhaps he's eying up his best chance of Academy Award glory.
