Drew Barrymore Reveals Why She Has Chosen To Act ‘Less And Less’ In Recent Years

Drew Barrymore has appeared in dozens of movies and has been acting since she was a little girl. In the early 2000s, Drew was a mainstay at the box office, often releasing a movie (or two) a year. However, in recent years, Drew has stepped behind the camera more often than in front of it, serving as executive producer of shows such as Tough Love and Knife Fight. During an interview on the Today Show on Friday, Drew revealed that motherhood has played a major role in her cutting back on acting.

"I think I will act less and less," she told Today's Savannah Guthrie. "It's hard to be present when you wake up before [the kids] and come home after they've gone to bed. That's just not the way I want to have this journey with my kids at this point in their life.”

Drew and her husband, Will Kopelman, are the parents of two-year-old Olive and six-month-old Frankie.

“Maybe when they're older, I will feel differently,” she said of taking acting roles. “At this point, I think that it has to be few and far between."

Drew starred alongside frequent co-star Adam Sandler in Blended this year, and is said to be filming Miss You Already, a drama set to be released next year. Still, she said she has been able to be a present and stable mother for her daughters.

“[I'm a] very traditional [mother],” she said. “I'm not organized in my life, like, I lose everything and I'm a complete disaster. With my kids, I really don't accept that for myself because I think kids learn from example of the way you live your life."

Drew's childhood was anything but stable. After starring in the hit movie ET at the age of five, Drew grew up fast. She began partying at Studio 54 as a young girl, was drinking regularly at the age of 11 and doing cocaine by 13. At 16 years old, she became engaged to Leland Hayward, but the couple split before getting married. Drew said that her unconventional past has actually helped her to become a better mother.

"I had a very untraditional upbringing, so I looked at it from afar and just thought, 'Well that's the exact opposite of how I'd want to raise my kids,'” she said.
