American Music Awards: One Direction Pick Up Three Prizes Including Artist Of The Year

One Direction and Katy Perry cleared up at last night's American Music Awards, with both artists picking up three gongs each. Following the success of their third album Midnight Memories, which gave the boys their third consecutive Billboard chart-topper last year, as well as their humungous Where We Are stadium world tour, One Direction took home the biggest prize of the night for Artist Of The Year. They also won the Favourite band duo or group in the pop/rock category and Favourite pop/rock album for Midnight Memories.

"This has been a real perfect day ... America feels like a second home to us," Liam Payne gushed while picking up their first prize of the night. The band also claimed their third number one album here in the UK for their fourth album Four.

Perry tied with the X Factor giants with three trophies including Single of the Year for Dark Horse as well as Favourite Female Artist – pop/rock and Favourite Artist in the Adult Contemporary category.

Iggy Azalea, who claimed the most nominations of the night with six, beat rival Eminem for the Favourite Artist – Rap/Hip Hop and Best Album - Rap/Hip Hop, after he blasted the Aussie in a snippet of his new single unveiled last week. She also performed her breakout smash Fancy and upcoming single Beg For It. Standing beside her mentor T.I., Iggy gave a heart felt speech, explaining: “This award is the first award I've ever won in my entire life, and it means so much to me that it is for best hip-hop because that's what inspired me to move to America and pursue my dreams, and it's what helped me when I was a teenager to escape and to get through my life and to better times. And it means so much that I can stand here against Eminem and Drake and come out with this.”

Taylor Swift won the first ever Dick Clark Award for Excellence presented by Diana Ross. The singer went on to slam Spotify once again in her acceptance speech. "To the fans who went out and bought over a million copies of my last three albums, what you did by going out and investing in music and albums is you're saying you believe in the same thing I believe in - that music is valuable and that music should be consumed in albums and albums should be consumed as art and appreciated," said Swift, who removed her music from streaming service last month.
