Sara Bareilles Reveals the Do’s and Don’ts of Being Fearless in Glamour August 2013

Her new song "Brave" just hit the charts, and during promotions Sara Bareilles scored a feature in Glamour magazine's August 2013 music issue.

While rocking an adorable pose for the Danny Clinch-shot spread, the "King of Anything" hitmaker discusses how she handles stress and reveals the lessons she's learned from being single.

Check out a few highlights from Miss Bareilles' interview below. For more, be sure to visit Glamour!

On her career over the past year:
"In 2013 I've already done a lot: I parted ways with one of the most important love relationships of my life. I left my home in California and moved across the country to New York City. I tackled my first-ever solo tour. All of this was terrifying, which is precisely why I did it. This year I'm choosing to be brave. And I'm living by a few lessons I’ve learned along the way."

On being perfect:
"I had panic attacks writing my second album. I’d pace around my house and take long walks to try to clear my head of the fear that the new one wouldn’t stack up to my first. A friend got me through my writer’s block by saying, 'Just chain yourself to the piano until the song is finished. Write for the sake of writing.' It worked. I realized not every song I write will end up on a record. Highs and lows are part of being human."

On her independence:
"I recently took a trip to Colorado on my own for a yoga and horseback-riding retreat. I turned off my cell phone and challenged myself to be in the moment, to take it all in. It was uncomfortable at first; I felt self-conscious about not being with a friend. But in those quiet times, I found how peaceful being an observer can be. (I learned the same thing eating in restaurants alone; it’s good practice.) It’s not easy to push yourself out of your comfort zone, but it’s worth it."

On her recent breakup:
"For me, being gutsy relationship-wise means letting myself be vulnerable. Leaving the comfort of a six-year relationship has been a huge hurdle. I miss it. It’s scary to share yourself with someone new. We all have things we wish we could hide; I know I’ve got emotional scars from past relationships. But true bravery is being exactly who you are, imperfections included. Vulnerability is the most precious gift you can give."
